Scholarship

I have lots of academic interests. Here are some of them:

Mathematics

I have a degree in mathematics from Stony Brook University.  I especially like to study linear algebra and finite group theory, but wherever there’s a problem to be solved, you’ll find me happy.

Math Education

I love to teach mathematics, and I have strong feelings about the best ways to teach mathematics (and why). Read more at my Professional page.

Philosophy of Mind and Neuroethics

Ontology and the philosophy of mind have always fascinated me, and my recent studies in phenomenology have sparked a new interest in how subjects interact with one another and with objects. Read more at my Philosophy page.

Aesthetics of Music

Theodor Adorno, for all his faults, put forward the foundations of a robust theory of musical aesthetics. One day I dream of writing a book developing a full aesthetic account of jazz music using the techniques of both 20c. and contemporary critical theory. Read more at my Music Scholarship page.

History of Mathematics

The humanistic approach to the history of mathematics is still in its infancy. I keep an eye on this literature, as I think critical theory and the humanities have much to offer the mathematical community — we still do not have a full understanding of the mathematician’s place in historical nor contemporary culture. Someday soon, I might compile a bibliography or a review of the literature on this subject. Stay tuned.
